Instant Stasis – Iceslab of Love (totuus.013.dl)

The music on this album is a part of modern dance piece “Jäärakaskimpale”. It was directed and choreographed by Anniina Kumpuniemi. The dancers are Katriina Kantola and Antti Seppänen.

The music consists of field recordings made in various locations including Tampere, Helsinki and Kopsa (Finland), Rome (Italy), Sankt Peterburg (Russia) and viola parts (played by Iida Savolainen) as well as xiao and banshuri flutes (played by Jukka Ahonen). The piece includes some parts in spoken word, I have included an edited version of the dialog.

The musicians were given no sheet music, no demos whatsoever, they didn’t even meet. They were only given a basic tone around which their melodies should move, and a rough sketch of an image I had pictured in my mind after I saw the choreography.

The soundtrack is produced live in every performance. The nuances vary, but the basic structure is the same. The places we visit are in same order, but the detail of the memory might sometimes blur, sometimes sharpen.

There is no MIDI syncing, the only digital sounds are some synthesizer waveforms which were created using Ableton Live. The sounds are layered together using Soundplant. Final editing was done in Sonar X1 Professional. Dblue’s Glitch and Nasty DLA by Variety of Sound plugins were used on speech samples.
Everything was mastered with Limiter No6 by Vladg

Script of the piece is loosely based on book Agatha by Marquerite Duras and tells a love story of a man and a woman, a brother and a sister perhaps, maybe two ghosts, who are travelling around in their memories and predictions of future.

The first part had to be splitted in half due to Bandcamp’s restrictions on song length.
